The city of Manchester is known throughout the world, and rightly so. It was the birthplace to the first computer, home of some of the most famous bands on the planet including the Stone Roses and Oasis and probably the most renowned reason...its two football clubs. Manchester United and Manchester City are sitting proudly at the top of the English Premier League table however this is not the only thing Manchester currently tops. The lyrics from Oasis band members Noel and Liam Gallagher which featured on their debut album, Defiantly Maybe,” I was looking for some action but all I found was cigarettes and alcohol’ seem quite fitting.
New figures released from the London Health Observatory (LHO) show that the city “recorded the highest rate for smoking attributable mortality in 2008-10 at 372 deaths per 100,000 population”.
The information from the LHO has been correlated and the results can be seen on a map of the UK which has used a coloured coded overlay to show:
The colour coded map uses the colour white to show a low value number, which is good, compared to red which conveys a high value. The figures in the report also show that smoking related hospital admissions costs the NHS over 1 billion in 2010/11 which works out at £37 per capita.
