How Many People Around The World Vape?

April 29, 2022 4 min read

Ever since the introduction of e-cigarettes to the open market, their use has exploded around the world. For people who vape, it can seem like a lonely practice particularly for those who do not know anyone who shares their passion. For traditional smokers, it is easy to socialize with other smokers as there is generally someone to share a cigarette with. Vape users do not have this advantage and it is common for them to not have anyone in their social circle that vapes. Fortunately, for these people, vaping is more popular than ever.

The question is how many people are actually vaping around the world today? The problem with answering this question is that vaping is relatively new and user research is still underdeveloped and thin. However, it is possible to create an estimate of the number of people vaping when looking at a range of recent statistics and sources.

How Many Vapers Are There In The World?

It is actually more difficult than imagined to present an estimate of the worldwide figures of vapers. This is due to the fact that the vaping market changes every day. There are laws in certain countries which change suddenly, impacting the number of people vaping. There are other countries that have seen an exponential growth in the number of vapers in the last few years.

To determine the number of worldwide users, you would need to turn to the CDC and Euromonitor International. According to the CDC, there are approximately 9 million vape users in the United States. According to Euromonitor International, this figure makes up 43.2% of the total worldwide vape user amount. When using these statistics, you can determine that there should be around 20.8 million vape users in the world.

This global user base is constantly growing, but it is important to note that there are regional differences. This is due to the laws and perceptions of the areas affect the ability of people to vape. This is one of the reasons why certain areas of the globe account for the majority of vape users when looking at global estimates.

Russia now has an estimated 1.5 million vape users. This is impressive when you consider that the country was late to join the e-cigarette revolution with the first store opening in 2014. There are now over 500 vape shops in Moscow alone and over 1400 across the country. Germany is in a similar state with other 2 million vape users which is set to rise in the future.

There are other European countries that have significant user statistics as well. A recent survey in France showed that there were between 7.7 and 9.2 million French residents who have at least tried an e-cigarette. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that around 12.2% of the entire Australian population smoke daily. Of these smokers, a third or 31% of them have tried an e-cigarette at some point in their life. However, only 4.4% of the smokers in the country state that they use these devices on a regular basis. As Australia has a population of 2.94 million, this would mean that only 129,000 people in the country are regular vape users.

Relatively little is known about the use of e-cigarettes in Africa. For the majority of the continent, it is believed that there is no real vaping presence. However, the country of South Africa is a different story. This country has seen some momentum in vaping with an estimate of 200,000 users.

There is also a very small vaping and e-cigarette presence in South America. This is due to the level of restriction and regulation on vaping in most of the countries on the continent. Some of the regulations and bans include a total sale and import ban in Argentina which was started in 2011. Brazil also has a ban on the manufacturing and sale of e-cigarettes which has been in place since 2014. The sale of vaping devices and products has also been completely banned in Uruguay.
