New research has found that the percentage of Brits who vape has hit 19 per cent. The Belfast Telegraph shared the findings of the Mintel study, which also revealed that the demographic that has seen the biggest growth in vaping is the 45 to 54 age group.
According to the survey, the percentage of Brits in this age range who use e-cigarettes hit 20 per cent in 2018, up from the 13 per cent recorded a year earlier.
However, despite the large increase in middle-aged vapers, the group with the highest percentage of people using e-cigarettes is still 18 to 24 year olds, with 28 per cent of people in this demographic using vapes.
Roshida Khanom, Mintel associate director of beauty and personal care, commented that the rising number of middle-aged vapers may in part be due to those in this age group seeing vaping as a fashionable trend.
“Our previous research shows that 45-54s are the age group most likely to agree that vaping is fashionable,” she stated. In fact, 71 per cent of people surveyed in this age group described using e-cigarettes as fashionable.
Although there have been concerns that vaping can lead to smoking traditional cigarettes, the Mintel research found that just one per cent of people who use an e-cigarette are non-smokers.
And the survey also found that more smokers are trying to give up traditional cigarettes. The percentage of smokers who tried to quit in 2018 climbed to 21 per cent, up considerably from the 14 per cent recorded in 2016.
This may mean that more people are ordering vape kits and e-liquids online as they look for aids that can help them kick the habit of tobacco cigarettes.
The Mintel research also revealed that 47 per cent of smokers use vapes to help them quit smoking, while 38 per cent have invested in e-cigarettes as a way of helping them cut down on the number of cigarettes they get through, Dentistry.co.uk reported.
While the NHS notes that e-cigarettes can be a useful smoking cessation tool, they are not the only way in which you can get support when giving up traditional cigarettes.
We recently highlighted some apps that are designed as quitting aids. Among them is the free app Live strong My Quit Coach, which allows you to set reminders and goals, as well as rewards. The app will also give you badges when you hit certain milestones on your quitting journey.
Another app that you might want to try is Butt Out. This one allows you to create motivational pictures and quotes so that you can remind yourself why you’re giving up cigarettes when you’re having a difficult day or just really craving a smoke.
Many of the apps out there will also offer encouragement by showing you how much money you’ve saved by not buying cigarettes, as well as how many cigarettes you’ve avoided smoking. Although it might sound trivial, these little stats can be a real morale boost and be what you need to overcome that craving and stay strong when you’re giving up smoking.
